Central Washington University issued the following announcement.
About four in 10 students studying at Central Washington University are transfer students from either a community college or other college or university, making them an increasingly significant segment of the university student body.
CWU will recognize the importance of the transfer student experience during a week-long observance of National Transfer Student Week, October 19-23. Events and activities will be designed with the transfer student in mind, including scholarship opportunities, exploring careers, and finding a job. All current transfer students and future Wildcats are encouraged to attend.
CWU’s National Transfer Student Week will kick off on Monday, October 18, with a Transfer Town Hall at 9:30 a.m. CWU Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Life Michelle DenBeste will be one of the presenters, along with Associated Students of CWU Executive Vice President Brandon Wear-Grimm and ASCWU Director of Student Life and Facilities Ashley-Sue Vizguerra. All CWU faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend. Advance registration is required.

Monday, October 19
From 4-5 p.m., information will be available about “Finding and Starting Research as an Undergrad.” Brandy Wiegers, director of the CWU Office of Undergraduate Research, along with Brooke Writer, graduate assistant, and Erin Cone, program coordinator, will lead the Zoom discussion.
Then at 8 p.m., the CWU Transfer Center will Monday Movie Madness “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” Campus activities will provide a Netflix Party link on social media an hour prior to showing.
Tuesday, October 20
CWU-Pierce County Regional Director Judy Colburn will discuss the programs available there and at the nearby CWU-JBLM (Joint Base Lewis-McChord) during an hour-long Zoom “infosession” at 1 p.m.
From 2-3 p.m., an “International Transfer Admissions Info Session” will be held, focusing on international student services, clubs and activities, internships, and the admissions process. Stacy Soderstrom, CWU assistant director for International Student and Scholar Services, and Kimberly Valenti, international student recruiter, will lead the Zoom presentation.
“On-Campus Student Employment” takes center stage from 3-4 p.m., when Joy Corbett, CWU Human Resources consultant, and Monique Gonzalez, student employment specialist, discuss why student employment can be one of most effective way to get connected to campus and discover mentors, while earning money for tuition.
A half-hour “Transfer Students with Military Education Benefits” webinar will be held at 4 p.m. at which attendees will learn how Veterans Affairs benefits can help them earn bachelor's degrees through CWU.
Also starting at 4 p.m., and continuing until 7 p.m., will be the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admissions Counseling (PNACAC) Virtual College Fair.
Wednesday, October 21
Alma Castillo, CWU admissions counselor, will offer “Transfer Admissions Info with CWU Admissions” at 1 p.m. During the hour-long virtual meeting, she will answer questions student have regarding transferring to CWU.
From 3-4 p.m., the topic shifts to “Financial Aid and Scholarships for Transfer Students.” James Paton, CWU financial aid counselor, will suggest ways to avoid Financial Aid headaches and offer scholarship hunting tips during the presentation.
Then, for fun, at 7 p.m. it’s “Trivia Night with the Transfer Center,” presented by CWU Student Activities.
Thursday, October 22
Career Services will host CWU’s Virtual Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event provides job and internship seekers with opportunities to interact with potential employers.
During the noon hour, the Ellensburg Transfer Picnic takes place, hosted by the CWU Transfer Center. The socially distanced event will be held on the Student Union and Recreation Center north lawn. Lunch can be purchased in the SURC or you may bring one. Student ID will be required.
“Breaking Through Career Uncertainty” will be discussed from 3-4 p.m. Steve Laing, CWU Career Services assistant director, and Chuck Zimchek, career counselor, will offer advice about a career direction, a choice of major, and how to confidently make those decisions.
Friday, October 23
CWU Transfer Center Director Megan McConnell welcomes attendees to a “Transfer Center Ellensburg Coffee Chat” from 10-11 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon. She and peer ambassadors will be available for some informal chat over a cup of coffee or tea. A special guest is also expected to make an appearance. The passcode for these events is 556898.
At noon, the Transfer Center will announce the winner of the Sticker Contest winner. The prize goes to the student who is judged to have taken the most amazing photo with their CWU Hearts Transfers sticker, which was mailed out just prior to school starting, and uploaded it to Instagram ( Instagram: cwutransfer).
“Mental Wellness During COVID-19” will be discussed by CWU psychology professor Cynthia Enge at 2 p.m. During her hour-long presentation, she will point out that many people are experiencing anxiety or depression for the first time during COVID-19. She will suggest when to worry about those feelings, how to manage them with coping skills, and where to reach out for help when people become overwhelmed.
