Everett Community College issued the following announcement.
In Everett Community College’s first-ever virtual theatre production, drama students will present Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in the style of TV’s “Unsolved Mysteries” online Nov. 12-14 and 19-21.
The show, “Tudor Truth and Jacobean Justice: True Crime Shakespeare,” is at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom. At show time, visit EverettCC.edu/Theatre to access the Zoom link and watch the show.
Audience members watching online can be part of the live, interactive production and help the cast members solve the mystery of “Macbeth,” Shakespeare’s tragedy featuring the murderous, fictional king of Scotland.
Theater Student Mandy Canales sparked the idea for this play after watching a performance of “Macbeth” on the London stage a year ago. She and other drama students developed her idea into this production.
“Little did I know that a note made a year ago would inspire a fully online performance of a retelling of ‘Macbeth’ during a time when many people believed it impossible that theater could move forward due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Canales said.
From 1987-2002, viewers of television’s popular documentary “Unsolved Mysteries” heard host Robert Stack’s characteristically deep voice tell them “Perhaps you may be able to help solve a mystery” before watching the story of a cold case or paranormal activity. Viewers were often invited to contact the show with tips about the unsolved cases.
“Presented in the style of the Stack-era ‘Unsolved Mysteries,’ the darkness surrounding the murders of ‘Macbeth’ is examined with never-before-seen witness testimony, reenactments of the scenes of the crimes, and an evolving theory behind his motive,” EvCC Theater Instructor Beth Peterson said. “My hope is that we can have the campus feel like a community even though we are all at home.”
The play includes mature content and is not suitable for children younger than 10.
The play was devised by and features Katie Becerril Maldonado, Canales, Tessa Denton, Tyler Garver, Neil Northup, Troy Ogle and Peterson. Canales and Peterson direct the show.
